Why Is the Healthcare Industry Abuzz About Blockchain? Blockchain. A day doesn't seem to go by without seeing articles and discussions about the technology. According to PwC executive Seamus Cushley, approximately $1.4B has been invested in blockchain just last year. In Gartner's recent hype cycle for emerging technologies, blockchain is approaching the peak. It is considered by Gartner as one of the ‘Key platform-enabling technologies to track.' While there is a lot of ‘hype vs reality' discussions going on, there is no arguing that blockchain is being taken very seriously across industries and cannot be ignored. A large percentage of the discussion does seem to focus in the financial services industry. This is not surprising given blockchain's historic legacy (I know, a disruptive technology already has a legacy) with Bitcoin and crypto currencies. In my article,... (more)

The #Blockchain Question | @CloudExpo #FinTech #AI #DX #MachineLearning

The Burning Blockchain Question - Should I Be Thinking About It? Shiny new toy syndrome. We all see it, we all experience it. Who doesn't like the shiny new toy?  Whenever a new technology hits the high points of hype, everyone starts talking about it like it will solve all their business problems. It’s 11 PM – Do You Know Where Your Data Is? | @CloudExpo #IoT #BigData

I was recently on a business trip out to Wausau, WI. The purpose was to conduct a training session on web application development for a new batch of associates at our onshore development center. When I picked up my rental car at the airport, I was very happy to discover it had built in Bluetooth integration for my phone. I have this feature on both cars at home. I love the convenience of having the car become an accessory for my mobile device. I immediately bound my phone with the car's Bluetooth. Then something unusual happened. My phone prompted me with a question: ‘Chevy/Malib... (more)

Is the Cloud Disrupting the CIO? By @EFeatherston | @CloudExpo [#Cloud]

Technology today seems to be moving at breakneck speeds. This speed of change is creating tectonic shifts in how businesses operate and leverage technology to achieve their goals. The convergence of key disruptive technologies (i.e. social, mobile, analytics, and cloud) is what one industry analyst refers to as the nexus of forces. Cloud is an underpinning of this nexus. How is this disruption impacting the CIO? Does the role change in face of all these forces, or is it just a continuation of what the CIO is (or should be) doing already? Let's take a deeper look at how the cloud ... (more)

Musings on the Internet of Things: I Am Now a ‘Thing’ | @ThingsExpo #IoT #M2M #API

Musings on the IoT: I Am Now a ‘Thing' I suppose I should explain. As many of you who have read my articles and posts the last few years already know, medical devices in the Internet of Things is topic that is near and dear to my heart. Literally. For over 10 years, I have had a pacemaker (see my piece The Internet of Everything - It's All About the ecosystem). But until last week, I was not a ‘thing' on the internet. Given the age of my pacemaker, I actually have to go in to the doctor's office for them to read information off of it. Last week, my cardiologist placed an insert... (more)
